As the soft glow of sun reaches across the horizon of Guinjata Bay, the region’s first female to work in conservation, Joaquina Guivala, twirls a blue measuring tape between her fingers as she eagerly watches the fishermen set their tackle for the day. In an area where baseline data indicates that the current fisheries are not only unsustainable, but targeting sharks and rays, her role is critical. Members of the community of fishermen have recently transitioned from the unsustainable - and often trecherous - practice of gillnetting to pole-and-line kayak fishing, as part of a push to tackle overfishing from conservation organisation, Love The Oceans.
